Djokovic opens against qualifier, Tsitsipas will face Murray | Tennis News

Novak Djokovic will launch his bid to finish the calendar year of the Grand Slam at the US Open against a qualifier, but his path becomes much more difficult with potential clashes against Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev.
Roland Garros finalist and third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will face former champion Andy Murray in the pick of matches of the first round. Murray is now ranked 114th in the world as he struggled to regain full form after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019.
In the women’s draw held in New York on Thursday, seed Ash Barty opens her campaign against Russia’s Vera Zvonareva while reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka will face Marie Bouzkova.
Second seed Daniil Medvedev will launch his bid to win his first major title against French veteran Richard Gasquet.
Zverev, who could be Djokovic’s opponent in the semi-finals, was the in-form player at Flushing Meadows, after upsetting the Serbian on his way to the gold in singles at the Tokyo Olympics and then winning the victory at the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.
Last year, Zverev was denied a first major tournament at the US Open after being beaten in the final by Dominic Thiem, unable to defend his title with a wrist injury.
The main draw action at the US Open begins Monday, with the tournament taking place with fans this year after taking place in a secure bubble last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s tournament has already seen several high profile withdrawals, with Thiem being joined on the sidelines by Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
