PARIS: Serena Williams has left the world’s top 50 for the first time since 2006, the great American tennis player occupying the 59th place in the WTA ranking published on Monday.
The 40-year-old has played just six tournaments in 2021 and none since her tearful first-round exit from Wimbledon with a leg injury ended the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s latest attempt to equalize Margaret Court’s all-time record.
Williams fell 12 places in the rankings led by Ashleigh Barty ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Sydney winner Paula Badosa is reaching a career high after a blistering 2021 season in which she reached the French Open quarter-finals, with the 24-year-old Spaniard starting last year ranked 67th.
American Madison Keys, a former world number seven, jumped 36 places to 51st after her victory in Adelaide, claiming a WTA title more than two and a half years after her last tournament victory in Cincinnati.
