Emma Raducanu became Britain’s number one after moving from world 150 to 23 in the latest WTA ranking.
Raducanu, who started the year at No. 345 in the world (Britain’s 11th best woman), surprisingly reached Wimbledon’s fourth round as a wildcard before retiring due to dizziness and difficulty breathing.
The 18-year-old fought to qualify for the US Open before surprising the tennis world by winning the Grand Slam after defeating 19-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez in straight sets. Finalist Fernandez went from 73rd to 28th.

Raducanu became the first British Grand Slam champion since 1977 and her remarkable feat saw her overtake Johanna Konta as Britain’s top ranked woman.
Konta had been Britain’s number one for 310 straight weeks.
Raducanu thanked his parents for giving him the “mental toughness” to be successful in tennis.
“I think from a young age I’ve always been raised to have mental toughness,” she told ABC’s Gold Morning America breakfast show Monday.
“My parents, you know, played a big part in my education.
“They were pretty tough on me when I was young, but it kind of shaped the way and I think now it helps on the biggest stages in the world and the Arthur Ashe stadium when you really need it and that ‘ was basically full capacity – so that was very, very cool.
“It was really nice talking to them after I won. They were so happy and proud of me and my toughest critics and very, very hard to please but, yeah, I got them with this one. They didn’t. could not resist. “
