History was written at the 2021 US Open – but not the kind of story many expected.
Daniil Medvedev spoiled Novak Djokovic’s candidacy for the Grand Slam and 21st major calendar by beating him 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Djokovic, who has sought to break ties with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for most career men’s Grand Slam tournaments, was unable to stop Medvedev’s serve as the 25-year-old recorded 16 aces in road to his first major title.
The women’s championship made history when unranked qualifier Emma Raducanu of Great Britain defeated unranked Canadian Leylah Fernandez. It was the first time two unranked players had met in the Open Era Finals and the first time a qualifier had qualified for the championship, let alone won the event.
