Andy Murray made a frustrated figure by losing to seed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets, 7-6 (4) 6-3, in the quarter-finals at ATP Metz.
Murray was very much in contention when he led the first set to a tie-break, but it was then that the Pole found the advantage to take it 7-4 and establish his authority over the game.

At 2-2 in the second set, a resurgence of the Briton still seemed possible, only for Hurkacz who broke serve to establish a 4-2 lead and regain control.

The world number 13 managed to find a superb rhythm on his serve as he shot 13 aces and won 83% of the points in his first delivery.
Hurkacz, 24, will then face Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk in the semi-final in Metz. Home favorite Gael Monfils is hiding on the other side of the table, along with Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.
For former world number one Murray, playing with a metal hip after his multiple surgeries was punitive after a string of positive results.
However, having reached his first ATP Tour quarterfinal since October 2019, Murray will surely feel encouraged in the 2022 horizon.
Next up for the three-time Grand Slam champion is a flight to San Diego for next week’s ATP tournament in Southern California.
