USC Men’s Tennis No. 10 scores 5-2 road win at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA. – USC’s No. 10 men’s tennis team hit the road and earned a 5-2 victory in San Diego when the Trojans visit the Toreros today. Host No. 35 San Diego kept the heat on USC, tying it early and keeping the Trojans close until Riley Smith nicked a tight tire and then Lodewijk Weststrate added to the advantage of tying victory on the road. USC moves to 12-4 overall with the win.

USC was strong in doubles, picking up wins on courts three and one to take an early lead. Jake Sands and Lodewijk Weststrate combined forces for a 6-4 victory in 3rd place first, followed by the top-ranked Daniel Cukierman and by Riley Smith same score at the No. 1 position to etch the 1-0 lead on the board for USC.

San Diego fought back in singles with a 6-3, 6-1 short-six win by Blake Kasday over the USC rookie Sean Holt. Grown 1-1, USC regained the lead with by Bradley Frye 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Sacchitt Sharrma on the third court. A little after, Jake Sands picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win on court five over Marvin Schraber, and USC trailed hosts 3-1. In a fierce battle on the first court, No. 60 Austin Holmgren of San Diego battled No. 1 of USC Daniel Cukierman and secured a straight-sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 victory to bring the Toreros within one at 3-2. On court two, however, No. 19 Rilley Smith took the deciding match with a 7-6(5), 7-5 win over Nico Borter to make it 4-2 and Weststrate closing in on victory on court four. Weststrate would complete the day’s action with their 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over David Norfeldt, and USC returned home with winning momentum in their sails.

Next up for the Trojans is a series of Pac-12 matches coming next week. On Tuesday (March 23), USC hosts Stanford at 12 p.m. at Marks Stadium. From there, USC will head to Arizona on March 26 and Arizona State on March 28 for two conference road tests.
